> What bank statements for a visa application need: the months, balance rules, stamps or translations, and getting them at low cost.
Bank statements for a visa application show the officer that you can pay for the trip or the stay, and where that money came from. Most consulates want recent statements in your name covering a stated window, often with a minimum balance held for a set time. The visa route's checklist sets the months, format and translation rules.

## What do bank statements for a visa application have to prove?

Visa bank statements have to prove two things: that the money exists and that it is yours to spend. A balance on the last page answers the first part. The rows of deposits above it answer the second, because they show where the funds came from and how long they have been there.

The UK government's [guide to supporting documents for a visit visa](https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/visitor-visa-guide-to-supporting-documents/guide-to-supporting-documents-visiting-the-uk) makes this split explicit. It asks for financial documents that "clearly show that you have access to the funds", and it lists bank statements "which detail the origin of the funds held". A statement that shows a healthy closing balance but no history is weaker than one that shows salary landing every month for a year.

So an officer reads a visa statement in roughly this order:

- **Name and account.** The holder's name must match the passport, or the file needs a sponsor letter explaining whose money it is.
- **Period.** The dates printed on the statement must fall inside the window the route asks for.
- **Balance.** The closing figure, and on some routes the lowest figure across the window, must clear the required amount.
- **Source.** Regular deposits from an employer, a pension or a business explain the money. One large unexplained transfer raises questions.
- **Spending.** Normal outgoings, such as rent and groceries, show the account is really used and the applicant has a life to return to.

When the money comes from somewhere unusual, attach the paper that explains it. Funds from a divorce settlement are one example: the settlement shows up as a single large credit, and a copy of the court order or agreement turns it from a red flag into a documented source. The post on [which bank statements a divorce asks for, and how many years](/blog/bank-statements-for-divorce) covers the statements that sit on the other side of that process. Money inherited from a parent is another case. If you are still collecting the paperwork, [getting a deceased parent's bank statements as executor](/blog/get-bank-statements-of-a-deceased-parent) explains what the bank will release and to whom.

## How many months of visa bank statements should you send?

The number of months for visa bank statements depends on the country and the visa route, so the route's own checklist is the only reliable answer. Some routes name an exact holding period. Others only say the statements should be recent. When the checklist is silent, send enough months to show a steady pattern rather than a single snapshot.

The UK guidance gives a useful outer limit. Its list of documents that are "less useful as evidence" in a visit application includes "bank statements or letters issued more than 1 year before the date of application". Anything older than a year adds pages without adding weight.

Within that limit, a few practical rules help you choose:

- **Match the window exactly.** If the route asks for a period ending close to the application date, make sure the latest statement reaches it. A statement that stops three weeks early leaves a gap the officer cannot see into.
- **Send whole statements.** A statement is a set of pages with a header, a period and a closing balance. Sending page 1 of 4 leaves out rows, and an officer may treat the missing pages as hidden.
- **Cover every account you rely on.** If the money you are counting sits across a current account and a savings account, include statements for both for the same months.
- **Prefer the bank's own statement over an activity screen.** A statement shows the bank's name, your name and the period on every page. A screenshot of an app does not.

If your route sets no window and you are unsure, three to six months of statements usually tells a clear story: income arrives, bills go out, and the balance stays above what the trip will cost. That is a judgment call, not a rule, so check the consulate's checklist before you print anything.

## Visa balance rules: the 28-day hold and sudden deposits

Some visa routes check not only how much money you have, but how long it has stayed in the account. The UK student visa is the clearest example: the money has to sit there for a fixed run of days, and the statement has to prove it never dipped below the required amount during that run.

The UK government's [Student visa page on the money you need](https://www.gov.uk/student-visa/money) says you must have the money "for at least 28 days in a row", and "the end date of the 28-day period must be within 31 days of the date you apply". Its own example: an application submitted on 1 January needs funds held for at least the 28-day period ending on 1 December.

### A worked example of the 28-day window

The dates and balances below are an example, not a real case. Suppose the required amount for a student is £10,539, and the applicant plans to apply on 20 March.

| Check | Example value | Pass? |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Application date | 20 March | — |
| Latest allowed end of the 28-day run | 17 February or later (within 31 days of 20 March) | — |
| Chosen 28-day run | 21 January to 17 February | Ends inside the 31-day limit |
| Lowest balance in that run, from the statement rows | £10,812.40 on 3 February | Above £10,539 |
| Statement pages that cover the run | January and February statements, all pages | Whole period covered |

The row that matters most is the lowest balance. A closing balance of £14,000 means nothing if a rent payment took the account to £9,900 for two days in the middle of the run. To find the lowest point, read every running balance in the window, not just the last line.

That reading is easier in a spreadsheet than on paper. Converted to rows, a month of statement lines can be filtered to the 28 days and sorted by balance, so the minimum shows up first. CheapBankConvert, which is preparing to open, turns a PDF statement into CSV or Excel rows for a one-time price and previews the first 2 pages free. The [get started page](/get-started) says how it will work.

### Large deposits just before applying

A big credit shortly before the application is the classic problem. Money that arrives from a relative a week before you apply may be genuine, but on a route with a holding period it may not have been there long enough to count. On a visit visa, it simply looks like borrowed money. If you expect a transfer, move it early, keep the statement that shows it arriving, and attach a short letter from the person who sent it.

## Stamped copies and certified translations for visa statements

Formatting rules for visa statements come in two kinds: how the bank certifies the document, and how a foreign-language document is translated. Neither is universal. A checklist may ask for a statement stamped and signed at a branch, or it may be silent on the point. Translation rules, where they apply, tend to be specific.

On stamps, the UK pages quoted above say nothing either way, and that is common. If the checklist for your route does ask for a stamped or certified copy, a branch visit is usually how you get one, and [getting a bank statement at a branch, same day, and what it costs](/blog/get-bank-statement-at-a-branch) covers what to ask for at the counter. If the checklist does not mention a stamp, a clean PDF from online banking, printed in full, is the usual choice.

On images, the UK visit guidance says that "wherever possible, digital images should be taken of original documents, not copies". A photo of a photocopy loses detail and makes the officer's job harder.

On translation, the same guidance says a document not in English or Welsh "must be accompanied by a full translation that can be independently verified". Each translation must contain:

1. Confirmation from the translator that it is an accurate translation of the original document.
2. The date of the translation.
3. The translator's full name and signature.
4. The translator's contact details.

A bank statement is mostly numbers, but the headers, the bank's name, the descriptions and the account holder's details are all text. A partial translation that skips the transaction descriptions is not a full translation.

## Visa file mistakes: card statements and year-old printouts

Some documents look like financial proof but weaken a visa file. The UK list of less useful evidence names several that applicants often reach for: credit card statements, photocopies of bank cards, and bank statements or letters more than a year old. Each one either shows debt rather than funds or shows a moment long past.

A credit card statement records what you owe, not what you hold. Even a card with a large limit and no balance proves nothing about the money you can spend on a trip, because the limit is the bank's money. Keep card statements out of the funds section unless the checklist asks for them.

Other mistakes come from the statement itself:

- **Cropped pages.** Cutting the bottom off a page to hide one transaction removes the running balance and the page number, which is exactly what an officer checks.
- **Edited PDFs.** Changing anything in a statement, even a typo in your address, can sink an application. If something on the statement is wrong, ask the bank for a corrected copy.
- **Mixed holders.** Statements for a parent's or spouse's account need the sponsor's letter and proof of the relationship, or the money does not count as yours.
- **Pending transactions.** A screen taken mid-month may list card holds that never posted. Statements show only posted items.

When something is missing, explain it rather than hide it. A one-paragraph note saying that a savings account was opened in February, so its statements start then, is better than a gap with no explanation.

## Can you get visa bank statements without paying bank fees?

Visa bank statements cost nothing if you download them from online banking, because most banks publish monthly statements as PDFs at no charge. Fees usually start only when you ask the bank to print, stamp, mail or dig out old statements, and those are the requests to avoid unless the checklist demands them.

Start in online banking. Find the statements or documents section, choose each month in the window, and save every PDF with a name that sorts by date, such as `current-2026-02.pdf`. Then build the pack.

### A checklist for the visa statement pack

- Every month the route asks for, for every account you rely on.
- All pages of each statement, in order, with page numbers visible.
- The holder name matching the passport, or a sponsor letter if it does not.
- A note for any large deposit, with the document that explains it.
- Full certified translations for any statement not in the required language.
- A stamped branch copy only if the checklist says so.
- A copy of everything for yourself, kept with the application reference.

Before you hand anything over, open each PDF and confirm the period dates join up month to month. A missing month is the most common gap, and it is far cheaper to download it now than to pay for a branch printout after the consulate asks.
